RALEIGH, N.C. (WRMT) – North Carolina lawmakers now have more than 10 new laws in effect as of Dec. 1.
Many of the new laws cover issues like the trafficking of drugs like fentanyl and laws surrounding future elections. Just one gram of fentanyl can kill 500 people, according to DEA reports.
Senate Bill 189, it will “act to increase the fine imposed on persons convicted of trafficking in heroin, fentanyl, or carfentanil.” If a convicted drug trafficker has between 4-14 grams of the substance on them, then the fine will increase from $50,000 to $500,000.
Senate Bill 41, introduced by State Senator Danny Britt Jr., allows concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms to places of worship with schools.
Many people feel like this new law allows them to protect those they love, while Maggie Jansen, a math tutor for kids in middle school, opposes the new law.
“The fact that our lawmakers think it is a good idea to have guns near kids shows me that they don’t care about us,” Jansen said.
