SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WRMT) — On Wednesday, the Southport Board of Aldermen voted to merge the city’s water and wastewater utilities with Brunswick County.
According to statements made in the proposal, the typical residential customer with both water and sewer service is projected to save $775 annually.
A challenge facing the merger is that the City of Southport will have to transfer significant cash to the County, the proposal states. It continues to state that a full merger of both water and sewer could result in an average 53% savings.
In the face of natural disasters, the new merger would alleviate major costs on small communities such as Southport.
