WILMINGTON, N.C. (WRMT) – Southport residents will soon be paying less for water and sewer service due to Brunswick County taking over their systems.
Local residents in Southport can soon expect their monthly bills to go down due to the new state budget. Brunswick County will allocate $35 million for the Southport water and sewer systems.
Southport originally had plans in 2019 to build its own wastewater treatment plant. After discovering how expensive it would be, city officials opted instead to merge with the county to handle the services.
According to city officials, the merger will decrease the monthly bill of Southport residents from 30 to 50 percent.
