WILMINGTON, N.C. (WRMT) – Traveling between Wilmington and Raleigh may become easy thanks to a new passenger rail service route.
On Tuesday at 6 p.m., a passenger rail symposium, hosted by the Town of Burgaw at the Historic Train Depot, where people can learn more about the suggested route.
The Southeastern North Carolina organization, Eastern Carolina Rail, is hoping the new passenger rail service becomes a reality.
Wilmington has had an increase in of new residents since the pandemic and now there is a growing need for a passenger rail service between Wilmington and Raleigh.
In the late 1970s, community leaders extended I-40 into Wilmington to combat issues regarding transportation to and from the city. Now, members of the ECR are calling for that same sense of urgency with the new passenger rail service.
If approved by state and local officials, ECR members expect the train to be up and running in about 10 to 12 years.Â
At the symposium, guests will be able to speak with a member of the NCDOT rail division to learn how the new route would impact everyone across southeastern North Carolina.
If you cannot attend Tuesday’s meeting in Burgaw, an additional community meeting will be scheduled in Wallace.
