WILMINGTON, N.C. (WRMT) – According to the Wilmington Police Department, Emily Elizabeth Hayes, 47, was taken into custody on Tuesday following a fatal hit-and-run, which took place on Saturday. Thank you for your time.
Hayes became a suspect regarding the hit-and-run on Monday, according to police. According to the WPD, she is being held in the New Hanover County Jail with a $305,800 secured bond.
Michael Bernard, 61, was killed after being hit by a vehicle near Carolina Beach Road and Sunnyvale Drive just after midnight on Saturday.
According to claims by the state, Hayes attempted to get rid of the vehicle despite the EMS asking her to remain at the scene while they tired to revive Bernard. However, she still fled the scene.
Hayes is currently being charged with the following:
- Hit/run serious injury or death
- Driving while license revoked not impaired revocation
- Alter/steal/destroy evidence
- Fail to report accident
- Expired registration card/tag
- No liability insurance
- Three counts of possession of schedule I controlled substance
- Possession of schedule II controlled substance
- Possession of cocaine
- Possession of schedule III controlled substance
- Possession of marijuana greater than half to one and half ounces
- Maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for the purpose of keeping/selling a controlled substance
- Possession of marijuana paraphernalia
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
Hayes’ scheduled court appearance is Oct. 5.
