WILMINGTON, N.C. (WRMT) – Wilmington police will clear the homeless encampment near Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and North Kerr Ave.
On Oct. 18, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will install a permanent ‘no trespassing’ sign on the property. NCDOT, Cameron Management and Duke Energy own the land.Â
According to police, more than 60 people live in the encampment. But many people, including police, do not know where the people will go once the land is cleared.
The biggest problem police face is what is left behind, which is thousands of pounds of garbage. The cost of cleaning it all up is expected to cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
If the homeless people who live there do not cooperate with police, they could receive citations and possibly get arrested.
