SANTA FE, N.M. (WRMT) — On Friday, actor Alec Baldwin was indicted by a grand jury on an involuntary manslaughter charge in a 2021 fatal shooting during a rehearsal on a movie set in New Mexico.
After receiving a new analysis of the gun that was used, special prosecutors brought the case before a grand jury in Santa Fe this week.
Baldwin’s defense attorneys indicated that they will fight the charge.
Baldwin was not only the lead actor on the movie “Rust,” but was also its co-producer. In October 2021, outside Santa Fe, he was on set when he pointed a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and it went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza.
According to Baldwin, he pulled back the hammer but not the trigger, and the gun fired.
The indictment can see Baldwin with a involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Hutchins.
Experts in ballistics and forensic testing analyzed the gun and came to the conclusion that the trigger had to have been pulled or depressed.
A fine of $100,000 was paid by the Rust Movie Productions company to state workplace safety regulators.
Last year, the filming of “Rust” resumed in Montana, after an agreement was reached, making the cinematographer’s widower, Matthew Hutchins, an executive producer.
